This project is funded under the auspices of the EU's Sixth Framework Program and known as NANDOS (Nanophotonic and Nanoelectronic Devices from Oxide Semiconductors). To date, the project has progressed on schedule, yielding good results in terms of developing the next generation of zinc oxide-based LEDs that emit white or UV light. The project will be wrapped up at the end of July 2008.
LightLab is studying a wide range of applications, the first of which is a new technology to produce white LEDs that are very small, just fractions of a millimeter, and which can also be consolidated into panels. In the long run, this technology could be used in panels as large as today's flat-screen television sets.
